Gear Engineer – Components | Cummins

We are looking for a talented Gear Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Components Business Segment in Troy, IN.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:

  • This product focused position performs established technical tasks at the sub-system and/or component level for current and future products within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centered nature of this position, they are very often a central point of coordination and decision making between product line engineers, customer teams, systems engineers, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.
  • Obtains input from stakeholders such as technical managers, project leaders, other product and manufacturing engineers and supplier partners to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.
  • Applies academic knowledge and existing experience to take action and make decisions that progress projects forward without sacrificing project quality expectations. Examples of these decisions include day to day project details, analysis or test work instruction details, coordination across discipline areas that are necessary to make quality progress.
  • Applies and improves processes such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG) and tools such as 7-step problem solving, design review checklist and other specialized tools required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.
  • Provides independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems or services with greater elements of ambiguity over the senior or lead engineer level and with full accountability to the project team.
  • Delivers independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.
  • Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit site.
  • Coordinates and directs work amongst technicians and temporary student employees, assists in the transfer of knowledge to lesser experienced engineers through either indirect (scope of influence) or direct management of a small, local group of engineers.
  • Provides support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.
  • Operates as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within the immediate team.

EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Post-graduate (Master’s) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

EXPERIENCE

  • Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

Overview:

  • The Gear Engineer will be responsible for the design and analysis of parallel axis and bevel gears used by Cummins-Meritor in current and future products. The Gear Engineer will also provide support to various product engineering groups and provide specialist guidance in application, development, manufacturing, quality of
  • Cummins-Meritor geared products. Responsibilities require some basic experience in various gear design tools. The Gear Engineer will be an individual contributor.

Responsibilities:

  • The Gear Engineer will report to the manager of design team and will work both independently and on teams depending on the type of project assignments.
  • This position is responsible for gear design and analysis, development of new technologies to continually improving product performance and to reduce costs and to work closely with Cummins-Meritor gear development center (GDC) to develop gears.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Design, development, test, and release of all types of gears, splines and clutch teeth.
  • Analyze and optimize all designs for performance requirements.
  • Calculates designs for various manufacturing systems and interfaces.
  • Assure gear design meets all internal and external performance and durability requirements.
  • Responsible for analyzing gear inspection reports, engineering tests results, and issuing required approval letters.
  • Troubleshooting of performance tests is required as necessary.
  • Approve test Lab set-ups and test reports.
  • Responsible for development and maintenance of DVP and DFMEAs plans on related gear programs.
  • Ability to work on multiple programs and on teams.
  • Responsible for conducting appropriate technology studies and investigations to obtain the best gear products in the market, utilizing current technological advances and corresponding engineering tools and manufacturing equipment within established schedules.
  • Interfaces with various functional areas, gear machine and tooling vendors supply system to coordinate for a timely release of the new gear product or revisions into production.
  • Develops engineering tools for accurate gear performance evaluation, to lead to the best gear geometry for performance most effective cost.
  • Attend product reviews, design reviews and customer meetings as necessary.
  • Assist Cummins Meritor domestic and international facilities as required.

  • Be able to write detailed technical reports and make technical presentations.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Base salary rate commensurate with experience. Additional benefits vary between locations and include options such as our 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan, Cash Balance Pension Plan, Medical/Dental/Life Insurance, Health Savings Account, Domestic Partners Coverage and a full complement of personal and professional benefits.

Base salary range: $84,800 โ€“$127,200
